Staying current with the SOTL literature can be challenging! This is especially true when SOTL enthusiasts are balancing other professional commitments as full-time faculty members and residents or students in graduate programs.
During the school year 2015-2016, our journal club membership included:
- one seasoned SOTL pharmacy faculty member,
- 3 SAPH graduate students, and
- 2 pharmacy residents.
We held 27, one-hour sessions in which we discussed 61 articles in 7 topic categories (Introduction to SOTL, Article Types, Publishing, Readings from Education and Psychological Science, Issues/Techniques in Pharmacy Education, “SOTL Toolbox,” Teaching Topics) and invited 7 guest speakers from 3 universities to share their work and expertise with the group.
The success of our group is largely due to our flexible (yet regular) scheduling and the mentoring nature of our learning community.
Our numbers are growing!
Since the start of school year 2016, the SOTL Journal Club has…
- convened 12 times;
- discussed 34 articles (or reports), 2 infographics, and 1 video;
- added one new discussion topic category (Peer Review);
- hosted one guest speaker;
- and added new faculty and pharmacy residents to our group.
Check out the SOTL Journal Club WordPress blog to see details of previous readings and discussion topics, such our discussion of Lyman Award-winning articles in September or when we invited Shannon Reidt, PharmD, to discuss her work on a recently published review article in November.
